4 Ways to Make Temporary Employees Feel Like Part of the Team

Permanent or temporary, an engaged worker is productive and valuable to the company. If you are hiring temporary workers for special projects or seasonal work, it’s important that you do your best to make them feel a part of the team. It will enhance everyone’s experience and better results will come about as well.

It doesn’t take special, creative ideas to make temporary workers feel like part of the team. In fact, you should treat them just as every other employee. These simple tips can sometimes be overlooked but are crucial to implement if you want a cohesive team made up of both permanent and temporary employees.

  1. Have an Onboarding Procedure

Just as an onboarding procedure is crucial to employee success and retention, it’s important for your temporary worker as well. This includes a tour of the office or facility, pairing them with a mentor or co-worker for a resource to ask questions, and a folder of informative essentials like pay, policies, relevant benefits, safety procedures and any other office information.

  • Make Introductions to the Current Team

Allow your temporary worker to get to know their co-workers and feel comfortable right away by introducing them to your current team. You can even set up a team lunch as a casual way for everyone to meet and spark casual conversation. Many companies offer organizational charts so their temporary workers understand the structure of the company and who is a part of each team or department. This can help them approach the right person for any question they may have as well.

  • Provide All the Tools They Need for Success

You hired your temporary workers because you need their work and talents. Be sure to provide them with every tool they may need to be successful. This includes information, access to files or technology, or any other piece of equipment they may need. If there is something that they need to provide, be sure to tell them as soon as the job offer is made.

  • Include Them in Meetings

Temporary employees need to be kept in the loop just like every other worker. When they are included in meetings, they feel valued, are able to offer their input and expertise, and it adds greater perspective to their work.
